Between Presence and Absence

In Between Presence and Absence, Travancore Palace hosts the sculpture of Dhananjay Singh, the New Delhi sculptor whose trees and human figures are built from coiled stainless steel, copper and bronze wire. The show brings together heads, faces and trees from different stages of his career: wire trees close to nine feet high, heads sprouting branches, and smaller pieces in steel and bronze.

The title points to the pull between opposites that runs through his work: hard and yielding, solid and open, living and dead. Each sculpture keeps both halves of a pair in view. In one, a tree climbs out of a face lying on its side; in another, bronze leaves spill from a head-shaped vessel.
