Gaurab Das

Gaurab Das casts and carves hybrid beings in bronze, wood, and stone — supple figures that drift between human, animal, and elemental registers, binding remembered worlds to a distinctly contemporary sculptural language.

Born in 1992 in Bagerhat, Bangladesh, Das grew up inside the act of making: his father, a commercial artist, worked at his paintings through cold winter evenings, and the idol-makers he passed on the way to school offered daily proof of what practised hands could draw out of clay — the material in which his own first experiments began. At Khulna Art College, long stretches in the library brought him to Rodin, Henry Moore, van Gogh, Picasso, and Pollock, and fixed his ambitions on sculpture, above all as it had unfolded within the Indian tradition.

In 2012 Das moved to India to train in the Department of Sculpture at Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan, taking his Diploma in Fine Arts in 2016 and an Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts in 2018, and choosing afterwards to root his practice in the town. Recognition has followed: he was awarded the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant in 2019, held his first solo exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, and has taken part in group exhibitions across India and Bangladesh. In early 2026, Black Cube Gallery presented Echoes of the Hand, a solo showing of new sculpture.

Bronze, wood, and stone remain the spine of the work, though Das increasingly tests mixed media — fibre resin, bronze dust — against them. He lives and works in Santiniketan.
